Digital cameras are the wave of the future. They are now affordable and come in so many different shapes and sizes that most anyone can find a digital camera to suit their needs. Technology has advanced the digital camera as well as the software that comes with it so that the average Joe can create professional photos with just the click of a button. The better you understand your camera and the basics of how the digital camera works, the better prepared you will be to make the most of your camera’s usage.

There are many basic factors to the digital camera which can revolve around terms such as pixels, megapixels, flash, digital camera modes, JPEG, white balance, digital zoom, optical zoom and more. The more you learn about the basic parts and functions of your digital camera, the better photographer you will be.

For example, when you learn how to work the manual functions of your camera, you can take better photos according to the scenario you are in while taking the photos. When you understand the how and why of digital photography, your photos will come out better.

One thing to understand is that digital cameras have sensitivity settings that are somewhat like the ISO settings on regular film cameras. Many digital cameras will have a sensitivity setting that is on average similar to ISO 100 or 200. Some will have a setting for ISO 400 and very expensive digital cameras may have ISO equivalents higher such as 3200 and 6400.

The digital sensor on the digital cameras is another important factor to consider. The digital sensor element is very small but is important to the types of pictures you will take with the camera.

Most digital cameras will have an optical and a digital zoom. The optical zoom lens will work by changing the focal length and magnification while the zoom is being utilized and the digital zoom works to crop the image to a smaller size. The cropped image will then be enlarged to fill the frame.

Digital cameras will also come with different pixel counts, storage space and other factors that affect the way you can take pictures, how many you can take and the quality you will get from your digital photos. When purchasing a digital camera, especially for the first time, make sure you learn as much as possible about the types of cameras available and what features you actually need. You could end up spending a lot of money on more camera than you need or purchasing a camera that does not meet your current needs.
